What settings do you use for WFret?

I’m about to make up some fret slotting templates using Todd Stocks tutorial.

I’m wondering what people use for the settings in WFret. The main one I’m not sure is, the Calculation Method. It has a choice for 12th Root or Rule of 18th. Based on Cumpiano I’m thinking the Rule of 18th is probably not the right one to use.

For the other settings I was going to use Inches with an accuracy of 1/64. I may switch the accuracy to 0.01”, but I’m not sure if the printer will be printing at a quality that will make a difference there.

For calculation method, I use the default option (it is no accident that it is the default). As for accuracy, use whichever matches the rule you will use to verify your accuracy once you print it. For me, I use a rule that is graduated to 50ths of an inch so I choose the 100ths of an inch option (and divide by 2. . .). I should probably get a different ruler but I doubt I am costing myself much precision in any practical way. Even if the print out is slightly larger or smaller than advertised, the error will be consistent. Since you are locating your saddle based on the 12th fret, rather than measuring the out the whole scale (not to mention adding an estimated compensation) any scaling issues come out in the wash. Do you really care if the scale is 25.379 instead of 25.38?

The main key with wfret is to make sure the printer is printing what you want. It takes some fiddling with the size % settings to get it right. They rarely print accurately at 100%. Once you get the setting right print a bunch of them.

If you want ,for example a 25.5" scale, you may have to put in 25.599 or 25.499 to get the correct scale.

I'm in the process of Starrett rule shopping. I've been using some of your posts for guidance there. Thanks for that chunk of info too.

Be careful with using the printed template too.
It is sensitive to humidity change and stretching from pulling the ends
I use it straight away after printing fixed to the board with a little gluestick and check it in place for length before cutting slots.
